June was having a bad day. Her blood sugars were all over the place and she needed to be with her son and daughter-in-law all day.
We called her home several times but couldn't reach her. We had a 5-hour drive to see her, but even without communication, we made the decision to drive the extra distance knowing there was a possibility of seeing her. We got close to her home in Egg Harbor and stopped for gas,and a quick bite. We arrived at her place at 7 and parked. Just as we were about to call again, our phone rang. It was Monica, June's daughter-in-law! They had just gotten back from a hard day and were amazed we were there. They came right down.
June just radiated joy and light. She was animated, smiling from ear to ear. It was easy to tell because she forgot her mask. We gave her a Tour mask, and she was happily surprised.
She recounted her time of being unconscious for days and waking up to hear Rabbi Jeff's prayer of healing at her bedside.
She introduced us to Monica and told us how wonderful her family has been to her, how nice her independent living is and what a nice community she had in Egg Harbor.
She wanted to hear about all her friends in South Windsor and relished every word.
People need one another. It is absolutely central to who we are. The pandemic has denied people that necessity for so long that even an ounce of contact does tons of good. To share that time with June was a reminder of how important it is to stay connected with each other during these trying times.
It's moments such as these that make us feel we have tapped into something beyond our understanding with Tour To The Wonderful. We sense this tour is more impactful than we imagined, and we can't wait to share more of these moments with the community.
